Imposition is the act of perceiving a Tulpa in the physical world with your body senses. It is considered to be a voluntary hallucination that can then be controlled by a headmate. Since it is simply a hallucination, the tulpa is only perceptible by the original creator. Imposition is generally mentioned in reference to visual sight hallucination, however with practice all 5 senses can be hallucinated. Imposition can also be used to hallucinate the individual's mindform as his own body, and visualize hallucination changes in the individuals environment. For visual imposition, these can range from 0 to a full on 5 on the Closed-Eye Hallucination Scale (albeit in an augmented, open-eyed reality) though usually the individual's perception only remains around level 2 to level 4.

Since becoming popular in the Tulpamancy community, Imposition has also been better realized by the Hypnosis Community and several Hermetic Groups. Contemporary Imposition has roots in the Hermetic New Thought Order, primarily exposed by the same individuals whom wrote The Kyballion.

Imposition is also used to induce Headspace, a concept in the BDSM (and especially Pet-Play) Community.

Religious and Spiritual groups
The concept of "imposition" is also deeply ingrained with Hermetic Religious Orders. One of Hermeticism's fundamental beliefs is that the entirety of the universe is consisting of Mentalism, -- that is: thought. Various sects are divided as to the actual origin of the thought (some choosing deity), but all are in agreement of this fundamental pillar. Due to this, Imposition is often used in the practice of Hermetic Magick deliberately, in which a Wonderland is hallucinated in the physical realm and imposition is used to feel deity (or other element). This is especially true for rituals such as The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (from most sects), and The Invocation of the Holy Guardian Angel (in Thelema).

Numerous theistic groups including New Thought believe that imposition may be able to physically alter the body to heal. While this may be debated in effectiveness, it is different from the concept of "prayer healing". Proponents of New Thought believe that ailments can be cured using vivid visualization via Imposition. The New Thought Movement also believes that the development of this skill can also be used to influence the mind to awaken to other things, including telepathy and The Law of Attraction.

Dr. Timothy Leary, and Exopsychology
Dr. Timothy Leary writes in his book Exo-Psychology: A Manual on The Use of the Nervous System According to the Instructions of the Manufacturers (1977) that concepts similarly described to Imposition will be traits of the next evolutionary step of mankind. In Exo-psychology, Dr. Leary states that there are (as he predicts) 8 primary stages of evolutionary development, which he calls "circuits". Leary states that he believed Humanity was (in the 1960's) reaching the 4th Circuit. Once the 4th Circuit (stage) reaches its final activation (development), the Fifth Circuit can be activated (initiated). Circuits 1-4 are concerned with what Leary calls a "Newtonian" and "Heliocentric" view of the universe, while Circuits 5-8 are "Eisenstein" and "Quantum"; that is: The development of circuits 1-4 are development of the immediate needs of the organism and are unable to think much outside of these hard-embedded constructs, but in circuits 5 and above the civilization becomes meta. This theory of evolutionary stages of consciousness was later expanded-on on by futurist Robert Anton Wilson and astrologer Antero Alli. Dr. Leary later reworked his thesis in Info-Psychology: A Revision on Exo-Psychology (1987).

Dr. Leary routinely expressed the belief that unlocking the mind was a necessity to the further development of the human mindexperience, as well as the unlocking of powers within the human consciousness in a religious sense. Leary, --known for his slogans, also-- frequently said the slogan "You can be anything you want to be this time around" referring to concepts now known as Headspace and Imposition.
